At the meeting of November 15, 2016 the City Council adopted Ordinance #684, which approved the scheduling of the City's election for June 6, 2017.

Nomination Period for the 2017 General Municipal Election began February 13, 2017 and closed on March 10, 2017. Nomination Papers were available from the City Clerk's office between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Voting and Election Information

The City Council is composed of five Council Members elected at-large. The Mayor is selected by other members of the City Council for a term of one year.  Council Members serve for staggered terms of four years.  There is term limit of three terms in the City.  This means you cannot serve more than three consecutive four-year terms as a Councilmember.  But you can run again for the same office after someone else has served. 

Eligibility and Candidacy

To run for office, you must be a U.S. citizen, and at least 18 years old.  Also to be eligible to run for office, a candidate must be a resident and registered voter of the city.

Voter Registration

Voters qualify for registration by being a U.S. citizen, aged 18 years or older, a resident of Commerce, and neither in prison nor on parole for a felony conviction. Re-registration is required if you have moved since you last registered, changed your name, or changed your political party affiliation.

The registration deadline is 15 days before an election. Voter Registration forms are available in the City of Commerce Clerk's Office, Los Angeles Register/Recorder Offices and most public buildings including Department of Motor Vehicles Offices, Post Offices, etc.

You may register in person by visiting one of the Los Angeles County Registrar’s Offices and mail a completed registration form.  You may also register to vote online at the California Secretary of State's website. General information

Polling Places may change from election to election - be sure to verify your polling location by checking the Voter Pamphlet/Sample Ballot you received in the mail or check online with the Registrar of Voters online lookup tool. 

Polls open on Election Day at 7:00 a.m. and polls close at 8:00 p.m.
